Portraits

Hey check it out! I just finished up this illustration and wanted to share it with everyone. The illo was for an article in The Canadian Sportsman. It was about different writers experiences with horse racing. So for each story I had to draw a portrait of each writer. It was fun to do. Enjoy.

It's cool to see a variety of features, such as the different ways you drew eyes, face shapes, etc. I guess it wouldn't be kosher to put up the reference photos you worked from? It would be cool to compare the illo's to the real life counterparts.

good ish, yo!

I'm not too sold on the middle one. Her lips look a little fuller than her photo counterpart. Plus, her hair and especially her eyebrows are much more lighter. The angle of her ear could be slightly adjusted down (counter clockwise).
The photo of the third lady has a broad chin and jawline, whereas the drawing looks more egg-shaped.
The first drawing has the most resemblance to the photo. I didn't know she has facial jewelry until I looked closer at the photo (it appears more subtle in the photo). But that drawing still works.

I tend to agree with Christoff Looburg on his comments. the first image definitely captures the human version more effectively.

I do think most artists seem to automatically idealize our subjects to a certain degree, if "idealize" is even the correct term. And that seems to be the case with your portraits.

But I think the last drawing captures that smiling quality in her expression, without having to resort to lots of "detail". nice!

I was working with a couple of photos with all of them ...I didn't just copy from this actual photo ... hence the hair colour on the 2nd girl ... thanks for the tips ...
