Redneck Games

Here's a new illustration I'm working on. It's a little bit of a departure from all the serious looking images I've been creating as of late.

This one is a spread for the new Three in a Box editorial promotion, The Box Lunch. It features wacky festivals and holidays from around the world.

My image shows the annual Redneck Games down in East Dublin, Georgia. The games feature such events as the mud pit bellyflop, bobbing for pig's feet, Miss Big Hair USA, and a toilet seat horseshoe competition.

Tyne - In Living Colour!

Pushpins

This is an image I did a little while back for the cover of Manufacturing Automation - a trade magazine about machine design and technology for the industrial workplace. The concept was suggested by the art director and I think it was a really successful piece. I especially love the warpy perspective. I achieved it by putting my map sketch into photoshop and playing with it until I got the desired result.

During the process there was a little bit of a hot potato game going on between the workers as I was told to swap and change items on their person. The linear underwent quite a few revisions until the right number of females, males, ethnics, and trades were accounted for.

I'm still waiting on a printed version. Should be exciting to see since this magazine is printed at a large size.

Life Drawing - March 8/07

I'm really digging the new life drawing studio we've been going to lately since early-January. The ratio of female to male models makes my new sketchbook a pretty sight to see than my last sketchbook from the last studio labelled "sausage fair".

Dirrty Sketches

I was assigned an illustration for an article in a magazine about 'World Orgasm Day' (December 22). Apparently, a few organizations have noticed that during times of great disaster or suffering, the crisis has a resultant impact on human emotions the world over and an actual physical effect on the earth itself. So, they declared World Orgasm Day to see if a major positive emotion on one day would have a positive effect on the mass populace and the world. So, first I sent them a few sketches.


Simple, but not too exciting.

Its been a while since I posted anything. Between teaching part-time and making a videogame I and finding spare time to get the ball rolling on my personal work and graphic novel concepts. I enjoy coming up with strange ideas like these. Tell me what you think.

Dora the Explorer

Character sketches for Dora in my friend Jonny's novel / graphic novel, Stripmalling. I wasn't given much in the way of instructions. Mostly, 'She should look sort of like Enid from Ghost World.'

Just trying to nail down a colour scheme for the beach scene in Popper Cosmix the webcomic. I'm sorta not happy about the colours I used in the sand...guess I still need to play around with it.

Oldie But Goodie Pin-Ups

Hey! After doing a pin-up for Rex Libris, I remember I did some others a while back. Check 'em out!

The first one I did was for Matthew Mohammed's comic Black Bastard. Some of you probably seen this before, it was published in the Blacktacula issue. LooBot was in that comic as well!


The second pin-up was for Ramon Perez & Rob Coughler's web comic Butternut Squash.

Subnormality

I have strep throat at the moment, so it doesn't look like I'll be doing much drawing for a few days. But I thought I'd post a link to a funny web comic started by Winston Rowntree -- many of you have probably seen him at Toronto conventions. He's a great artist, and his stuff is often ridiculously funny.

Life Drawing - Feb 15/07

This week's challenge was barbarians. It was a bit of a challenge to come up with barbarian references by memory.

Well, I haven't been drawing all that much lately, but I did start actually working on the third issue of Amazing Challengers. So I've scanned the pencils of the first page. Can't say it looks like much because my pencils are ridiculously not-tight. I need to keep the inking process somewhat interesting.



A very mundane splash page to a mundane issue. They spend the entire issue trying to work up the nerve to cross the road.
